Highly energy efficient buildings, with a heating/cooling demand of just 15 kWh/(m²yr) for new builds or 25 kWh/(m²yr) for retrofits, are already possible now. This has been shown time and time again by the tens of thousands of Passive House buildings worldwide, covering the spectrum of climates, architectural styles and building types (residential, commercial, municipal and special-use buildings such as swimming pools). With the support of industry and current technological improvements integrating BIM into project planning as a sustainable energy supportive technology for reducing carbon footprint and increase of energy performance, the buildings of today will go from strength to strength to meet EU 2050 goals. In this session, we will discuss what we can do now, including the best practices and lessons learned when planning and constructing highly energy efficient buildings. This will be followed by a discussion of what still needs to be done and developed to meet 2050 targets, including ways in which industry must develop and the role of BIM in energy improvement management, with a particular focus on policy recommendations for further support for local actions and engagement.
